He Shou Wu
He shou wu (Polygonum multiflorum) can be used as a topical lotion or taken as an oral herbal supplement (500 mg three times a day) to help treat androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium types of hair loss.
Physiological Effects and Benefits of He Shou Wu
- Also known as Chinese knotweed, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat hair loss. It is believed to stimulate hair growth and convert vellus hair to terminal hair (important in androgenetic hair loss) which has been corroborated by a small clinical trial.

Precaution
Experts warn, based on several case reports, that anyone with liver disease or elevated liver enzymes should not take this herb because of potential liver damage. 2
However, evidence suggests that extracts from P. multiflorum may actually exert protective effects in the liver. Other experts point out that the herb has been used for many years safely but that theoretically it could worsen liver problems in those with existing liver disorders. 5, 245
